Grow Your Own

Vegetable Plants

Beat the 'Crunch'

The advantages of growing your own fruit and vegetables means more freshness and flavour, healthy eating and saving money.

You don't need a large garden or allotment to start growing some of your own produce, you may be amazed at how much you can grow on your patio and also how easy it is.

Great Container Veg

The following are very rewarding crops and can be planted in containers if you are short on space.

Beetroot - The young leaves can be used as 'spinach' or in salads and are rich in calcium, iron and folic acid.

Herbs - A variety of herbs can be grown in pots and containers and can be picked fresh every day, such as Parsley, Coriander and Chives. You can also pick some herbs in the summer months and dry them for use in the winter months such as Basil, Oregano, Thyme, Mint and Sage.

Lettuces and Salad Leaves - Mini Lettuces such as 'Little Gem' and 'Tom Thumb' are ideal for container growing. Rocket, Coriander, Chicory and Spinach are also tasty choices to help complement any salad. Pick by pinching off the top few leaves leaving a stump to re-sprout for follow on crops so you can have a continuous crop.

Tomatoes, Aubergines and Peppers - Classic Mediterranean vegetables whose fruit all look amazing in containers. In sheltered regions they will grow fairly well outdoors - tomatoes especially - on a sunny patio or other warm sheltered site.

Chard Bright Lights
We stock a wide range of vegetable plants which are home grown at our nursery site from Cabbage, Cauliflower, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Peas and Beans along with some new varieties for 2009 such as Chard 'Bright Lights', Mangetout 'Oregon Sugarpod', Rocket 'Discovery' and Spinach 'Perpetual'.

We also have a range of growing media such as different grow bags to help you get the best results from specific crops such as salad bags, potato bags and traditional tomato bags.

Fruit

BlueberryAs well as growing vegetables in containers, some varieties of fruit can also be container grown such as Gooseberries, Blackcurrants, Redcurrants and Blueberries and Strawberries are great for growing in hanging baskets.

We have a selection of soft fruit such as Blueberries, Strawberries, Blackberries, Rhubarb, Gooseberries, Fig, Grape Vines, Kiwi, Cranberry and Redcurrants at the Garden Centres.
