Tasks for May

Summer Planting
Plants that have been over-wintered in the greenhouse can now be put out along with summer bedding, but make sure they are protected from late frosts.

Sow hardy annuals directly into the ground to give a stunning patchwork of colour in late summer.

Hanging Baskets
Make up hanging baskets and troughs with summer bedding and half hardy perennials.

Vegetables
Sow vegetable crops like Peas, Carrots, Beetroot, Turnips and Lettuce directly into the ground. Vegetable plants such as Cabbage, Cauliflower and Sprouts can also be planted now.

Perennials
Stake tall growing perennials like Delphiniums and Hollyhocks to prevent wind damage.

Lawns
Apply mosskiller to lawns if needed, then scarify to remove any thatch and dead moss. Feed with a high nitrogen fertiliser.

Spring Frosts
Use horticultural fleece to protect new growth on delicate plants such as Pieris and Japanese Acers to prevent damage by late spring frosts.

Weeding
Hoe or hand weed borders and vegetable plots, to reduce the competition ofr water and nutrients.

Pruning
Prune early flowering shrubs such as Forsythia, Ribes and Spiraea Arguta as soon as they have finished flowering.
