Jobs for September

Hanging Baskets & Tubs
Plant up tubs and baskets with winter interest plants to give a bright, colourful display all through the winter months.

Vegetables & Fruit
Continue harvesting other vegetables as they become ready. Pot up runners from strawberries for new plants next year. Pick early varieties of apples as they ripen.

Perennials
Dead head perennial plants as the flowers fade to keep the border tidy.

Cuttings
Continue to take cuttings from tender perennials like Pelargoniums and Fuchsia, to over-winter in the greenhouse for next spring.

Lift and pot up mother plants towards the end of the month if you intend to over winter them.

Lawns
Continue mowing the lawn but raise the height of the cut, rake out any thatch that has built up over the summer. September is also the last chance to apply weedkiller to the lawn and also the time to sow new lawns from seed and repair any bare patches.

Greenhouse
Check and service greenhouse heaters in preparation for the first frosts.

General
Plant spring flowering bulbs such as snowdrops, crocus, allium and narcissi. Start winter digging towards the end of the month if your soil is heavy and wet in winter.
